Bethia was named after her mother and was born in Clackmannan, Scotland. In 1872 she went to New Zealand with her brother James. They arrived October 25, 1872.

Tuapeka Times, Volume 5, Issue 246, 17 October 1872, Page 5 reported that the ship May Queen left London for Otago on July 29, 1872 with James Bachop, 22 and Bethea Bauchop, 20 as passengers.

PICKERING - On April 3, 1928, at her residence, 9 Felix street, N.E. Valley, Bethia, beloved widow of James Pickering; aged 76 years. "At rest." - The Funeral will leave the residence TO-MORROW (Thursday), the 5th inst., at 2 p.m., for Anderson's Bay Cemetery.- R. M'Lean and Son, undertakers.
