Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as Major of the 6th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry, then as Colonel and commander of the 11th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. In 1865 as commander of the 2nd Brigade of the Cavalry Division of East Tennessee, taking part in the capture of Asheville, North Carolina during Major General George Stoneman's raid through that state. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on January 31, 1865.
