She was the daughter of John Andrew Tarver and Mary A.F. Field Tarver. She married David McKnight III, who was born in Cotton Grove, Tennessee. They were the parents of six children: Julia (1858-1860); Mildred Mary (1859-1942); Mary Field (died in infancy); Tinie Tarver (1863-1955); Charles Fenner (died in infancy) and David IV (1869-1940). Mary Content was considered an adopted daughter and her exact relationship to the McKnight family is unknown. After the Civil War, Dr. David McKnight refused to take the oath of allegiance required to reinstate his United States citizenship. The family moved to Mexico, where they lived in the Neuvo Leon town of Monterrey, the Coahuila towns of Parras and Saltillo and Matamoros, near Brownsville, Texas. After the death of Dr. McKnight in 1873, the family continued to reside in Mexico, but eventually returned to Seguin, Texas and later moved to San Antonio, Texas.
