Vern Johnson, 69, 711 North Madison, died at Grace Hospital Friday morning after a one-year illness. Born Sept. 19, 1900, in Reno County he lived in the county all his life and in Hutchinson since 1931. He was a correctional officer at Kansas State Industrial Reformatory for 25 years, and retired May 1. He married Elsie Griffith July 1, 1950, in Hutchinson. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Huntsville Methodist Church. He is survived by his widow, of the home; sons, Wilford E., Alden; Marvin W., Chico Calif; stepson Robert Griffith, Miami, Fla.; stepdaughter, Mrs. Margie Valladares, Charleston, S.C.; brother, C. Norris Johnson, 1120 Prairie; Harold Johnson, Pratt; sister, Mrs. Zelma Engbrecht, Seattle, Wash.; and eight grand-children. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Elliott Chapel; Rev. Lester Morgan. Burial will be in Peace Valley Cemetery, southwest of Sterling. The family suggests contributions to the Cancer Fund. Friends may call at Elliott Mortuary.
