He moved to Viroqua, Wisconsin before the Civil War. John enlisted in there.

Civil War- Private; Co. I, Regiment 6 Wisconsin Vol. Inf. Enlisted June 1, 1861, Honorably Discharged Oct 31, 1862. Wounded twice, through larynx in battle at Gainesville, VA on Aug 28, 1862 and received an ax injury on the top of his right foot. Promoted to Brevet Captain on 29 Aug 1862. Received a Disability Discharge Company I, 6th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin on 16 November 1862. Captured at Centerville, Virginia on 5 Sep 1862, paroled same day.

John married first on 23 Apr 1872 in Xenia, Green County, Ohio Lizzie Fox. She died the following spring; they had no children, and she does not have a headstone

John married second on 17 Jul 1893 Lizzie Odell, daughter of William Hoyt Odell and Anna Jenette.
She died 19 Nov 1898 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California buried next to John L. Somerby at Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.
