The father of a Chesterton resident, Erwin F. Franzen, "Erv," of Valparaiso, died Monday, May 26, 2003 at Valparaiso Care and Rehabilitation Center under the care of Harbor Light Hospice Service. He was 83.

He was born May 27, 1919 in Palisade, Minnesota, the son of Emil and Jennie Franzen, who preceded him in death.

In June 1946 he married Norma Carolina Julian, who preceded him in death after 49 years of marriage.

He is survived by three sons, Glenn (Young) of Valparaiso, Eric (Donna) of Breckenridge, Colo. and Stuart (Susan) of Chesterton; grandchildren, Leon (Alison), Brian, Sara, Todd, Chris, Jeff, Katy, Greg; a great grandchild, Julian and many dear friends and neighbors.

He was a resident of Valparaiso for the past 28 years. After graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1940, Erv worked at several steel companies including Republic Steel and A. Finkl and Sons.
