Old Buddies Attend Services for George Leady, 94

Last of the 225 heroic firemen who fought the great Chicago fire of 1871, George Leady, 5530 Bishop St., was buried today in Oakwood cemetery. Old buddies, members of the Retired Firemans association, who knew him during his 39 years as a fireman, were in charge of the funeral services in the St. Basil church 1850 W. Garfield Blvd. Officers of the association were pallbearers. Mr. Leady died of pneumonia Sunday in his home after an illness of two weeks.
He was 94 years old. He is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Lillian Betzold, of the Bishop St. address and a sister Mrs. Louise Carey, 511 W. Garfield Blvd. Mr. Leady was the son of a fireman. He was born in 1845 in his family?s home then at State and Harrison Sts. During the Chicago fire he distinguished himself by outstanding service. As engineer of Engine No. 9, he was the last man on the docks on the South side of the river during the fire, running his own engine and Engine No. 13 on suction duty to obtain water from the river to fight the roaring flames. The engineer of the latter pumper had been overcome by smoke. Later that same night Mr. Leady also managed two other engines in pumping duty, drawing water from the lake at 25th St.
