A. H. Hughes, 1030 East Carpenter street, aged 70 years, ended his life yesterday afternoon by shooting himself. He was suffering from a cancer on the face, which is believed to be the chief cause of his act. Hughes occupied a part of the house, living alone, but took his meals with a family living in the other part of the house. His death was discovered when one of the family went to call him to supper. He was last seen about 2 p.m. The decedent was a paper hanger. He is survived by a nephew in the west and a niece in Chicago. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL 5-4-1918
