Civil War Soldier, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

Ohio State Secretary of Agriculture, 1894-1906

Wells moved with his parents and brother to Castalia, Ohio in 1852. He enlisted on April 24, 1861 in Company E, 8th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry for a 3-month term of service. He was mustered out June 17, 1861. Rank: Sergeant. Wells immediately reenlisted, June 17, 1861, as 1st Lieutenant, Company E, 8th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, for a 3-year term of service. He was promoted to Captain, March 11, 1862 and assigned to Company H. Captured near Falmouth, Virginia, Nov. 12, 1862, he was paroled and exchanged in June of 1863. Returning to his regiment he sustained a shoulder wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 3 1863. After a period of hospitalization he was discharged for medical reasons, January 8, 1864.

Wells returned to Castalia, Ohio where he raised a family and farmed until his death from apoplexy, April 8, 1906.

I'm fairly sure that my grandfather Wells David Ream was named after him. My great grandmother and Wells Miller both went to Oberlin College and both taught in the Castalia/Margaretta schools
