"Died at the residence of John Ferguson, in Chester District, S. C., on the 2d ult. (March 1834), the Rev. Samuel McCreary, aged 70 years. The deceased was born in the District in which he died. At the age of 16 he turned out as a volunteer in defance of his country; was in the battle of Hanging Rock, and at Rocky Mount.… he attended a Presbyterian Camp meeting at the Waxhaws, in the year 1801 or 2 at which place he heard a sermon delivered by Dr. McWhorter. Shortly afterward, he became a member of the Baptist Church at Hopewell. The death of the Rev. Mr. Eckles, which occurred soon after, opened the way, to minister to the church in which he was a member."

"Sacred To the memory of Samuel McCreary, who departed this life on the 2nd day of March 1834, age about 71 years. He was one amongst thee first who constituted The Hopewell Baptist Church and was ordained Pastor of said church on the 11th day of Feby 1807. His first and last sesrmono was preached at said church and his time was entirely devoted to the preaching of the Gospel."
