SPRINGFIELD - Mary L. Gates, 76, of Springfield went to rest in the Lord's arms at 3:25 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, 2008.

She was born Jan. 20, 1932, in Washington, Mo., to Cornelius and Ida Rott Manhart; they preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph John; five sisters; six brothers; and her husband of 55 years, Frank Gates III, whom she married in 1950.

She is survived by a daughter, Frances Louise Flanagan of Springfield; a son, Anthony Frank (wife, Shannon) Gates of Havana; four grandchildren, Kathleen, Jordan Joseph, Shawn and Ashton; a great-grandchild, AJ Roth; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary worked for 23 years, retiring in 1988 from the state of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation, where she was employee of the year in 1983. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church and was a very generous person, giving to many charities and organizations.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at St. Joseph's Church. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at St. Joseph's Church with Rev. Peter Harman officiating. Burial will be held in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
