Carl Piper, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Piper, residing at 410 West Canedy street, was run down and fatally wounded at 9:20 p.m. yesterday while playing in the street in front of the Hay-Edwards school. The driver of the car put on more speed after the car struck the youth, it was said, and his identity was not learned. Following the accident the boy was picked up by a couple of his small friends with whom he had been playing, and carried to his home. Three physicians were called, but their efforts to revive him were in vain. He died at 10:20 p.m.

Coroner Rhodes was notified of the accident and will conduct an inquisition into the circumstances surrounding the boy's death. The police were notified and are making an effort to locate the driver of the machine that run down the youth. They will find their efforts difficult, however as there is no tangible clew as to who the autoist is. None of the witnesses to the crash saw the number of the car. Some said it was an Overland machine while others maintained that it was a Cadillac.

A coroner's jury yesterday afternoon returned a verdict finding that Carl Piper, 9-year-old son of Henry Piper, was accidentally killed last Friday when he was run over by an automobile driven by [redacted], who is a retired farmer. He was exonerated from all blame for the youth's death by the verdict of the coroner's jury. Following the accident, [driver] carried the injured youth in his car to the boy's home, where he died a short time after the wheels of his car had run over him. He called several physicians to wait on the lad and then went back to the boy's home, arriving a short time before young Piper died. The State Register incorrectly reported the accident in Saturday morning's addition, inasmuch as it was stated in the account of the accident that the driver of the automobile escaped from the scene after running over the youth.
