She was the daughter of Peter Sowder and Sarah "Sally" Lacefield Sowder.
She and Isham had 12 children (listed with Isham).
Betsy worked by her husband's side and helped clear the land, build their home and worked the garden for the food for her family. When they came to Lawrence County, Indiana, they already had 10 children to care for. They built a lean-to in which to live, at the edge of their land while they built their house and cleared the land.
No one said it was easy for the pioneer wife....and it seems Betsy was no different, as most of her children were too young to be of much help and needed the guidance of the dangers of a new land with constant supervision.
Not only did the wife work in the fields and the house, but they made all the families clothes, soap and candles, and gathered herbs for their medical needs.
