He was born on July 4, 1916, in Dubois County, the son of John William and Margaret (Kendall) Warthan. He was a retired employee of the Richland-Bean Blossom School Corporation and worked at Edgewood High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was awarded two Bronze Stars. He attended the Stinesville Church of the Nazarene and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He particularly enjoyed his family and his garden.
Survivors include his wife, Fayetta (Medcalf) Warthan of Gosport; two daughters, Judy (husband James) Hartgraves of Solsberry and Margaret Hill of Bloomington; four sons; Jerry (wife Treva) Warthan of Ellettsville, Clarence (wife Joetta) Warthan of Frankfort, IN, Charles (wife Marianne) Warthan of Bloomington, and Don (wife Katherin) Warthan of Gosport; sixteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Albert Warthan in 1968; two sisters, Ruthie Huff and Minnie Taylor; two brothers, James Warthan and Edgar Warthan; and one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 13, 2008, at the Stinesville Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Ralph Barger officiating. Burial will be at Liberty Cemetery near Gosport where the Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Graveside Rites.
