Roman Catholic Cardinal. Mira born Pablo Muñoz Vega joined the Society of Jesus on September 27, 1918, undergoing studies at the Jesuit houses of studies of Quito, the Colegio Máximo de Oña in Burgos, Spain, and later at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Ordained priest in the latter city on July 25, 1933, he served as faculty member of the named Pontifical Gregorian University from 1937 and 1949 and again between 1958 and 1964. Jesuit provincial of Ecuador from 1949 till 1955, he furthermore acted as rector of the Pontifical Pio-Latin American College of Rome from 1955 until 1958; rector magnifico of the Pontifical Gregorian University from 1958 until 1963; and expert during the Second Vatican Council. Appointed coadjutor 'sedis datus' of the archdiocese of Quito on February 7, 1964, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Ceramo on the following March 19 inside the church of Sant'Ignazio a Campo Marzio in Rome from Cardinal Carlo Confalonieri. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Quito on June 23, 1967 following the retirement of Cardinal Carlos María Javier de la Torre, he was also appointed president of the Episcopal Conference of Ecuador. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of April 28, 1969 with the title of San Roberto Bellarmino. Resigning from the pastoral government of his see on June 1, 1985, following his death in Quito, he was laid to rest inside the local metropolitan cathedral. On February 21, 2013, Msgr. Fausto Gabriel Trávez Trávez OFM., archbishop of Quito, promulgated the decree for the introduction of the cause of his beatification.
