Born on 17 January 1893 at Sarcoxie, Jasper County, Missouri, Salem Devere Almegourd was the son of Marten Jense Almegourd and Lois Emma (Sparks)Almegourd. He served in Company "E", 2nd Infantry, Missouri National Guard and saw World War I oversea service until wounded. He was subsequently discharged with a medical disability and returned to the United States. Salem was married to Mary Caroline Scroggs, daughter of Horace on 31 March 1940 at Joplin, Missouri. They had no children. They spent most of their working careers in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma.
