By the time of his death, at the most venerable age of 104, Father Alois Tille, was the oldest priest in the history of the Diocese of Mainz.

Born on December 15, 1901, in Niemes, Sudetens, he grew up in Marienbad and was ordained to the priesthood after successfully concluding his theological studies on July 6, 1924, in Prague. Serving as a chaplain and minister, in 1943, he was named as episcopal notary and secretary of the vicariate.

Following the end of the Second World War, Tille moved back to his homeland, incardinating with the Diocese of Mainz, performing pastoral service in Lichtenberg and within the Dekanat of Dieburg. Member of the Diocesan Synod, in 1960, he was named as an official within the Diocesan Court of the See of Mainz, by Bishop Albert Stohr, an office he held until the venerable age of 93, still serving as an expert and marriage defender. He only retired on January 1, 1994.

On July 6, 2004, Tille celebrated the eightieth anniversary from his ordination to the priesthood, with Cardinal Karl Lehmann, Bishop of Mainz. Still in good health and spirits, with a clear mind, Fr. Tille passed peacefully away at the age of 104, during the early hours of Wednesday, February 22, 2006.
