Rev. Dr. Sandford Van Benschoten was the son of Richard and Catherine Ann (Taylor) Van Benschoten. He was the husband of Ellen (Gulick) Van Benschoten. They were married August 26, 1858. Ellen died June 28, 1916. Re. Dr. VanBenschoten was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church: East Genesee Conference 1855 Discontinued 1856 East Genesee Conference 1858 F 1860 Newark Conference by transfer 1868. He served Rochester: Frank Street 1855 - Lyons 1858-1859 - Penn Yan 1860-1861 - Rochester: First 1862-1863-1864 - Elmira: First 1865-1866-1867.

VAN BENSCHOTEN - Died at Passaic, New Jersey, on Friday, December 18, 1896, Rev. Sandford Van Benschoten, D. D., in the 65th year of his age.
Funeral services at the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Passaic, New Jersey, on Monday, the 21st inst., at 2:45 p.m. Train leaves New York City 1:45 p.m. via Erie Railroad, foot of 23d Street. Interment at Penn Yan, New York.

The Rev. Dr. Sandford Van Benschoten, Presiding Elder of the Paterson, New Jersey, District of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and formerly Presiding Elder of the Elizabeth and Newark Districts, died suddenly yesterday morning at his residence on Paulson Avenue, Passaic, New Jersey.
Dr. Van Benschoten was born in Dutchess County, in 1832. After being admitted to the ministry he preached for a time in churches at Rochester and Elmira, New York. He was in Newark from 1870 until 1873. when he was sent to the Emery Methodist Episcopal Church, at Jersey City. From there he went to Passaic. Then he went to Elizabeth and became Presiding Elder of the district. From Newark he was returned to Passaic, where he remained until his death, being Presiding Elder of the district. His brother, James Van Benschoten, is Professor of Greek in Wesleyan University.
