Services for former Yamhill resident Russell A. Kahler of Beaverton will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. The Rev. Jim Peterson will officiate.
Viewing will take place from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville.
Mr. Kahler died Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at Beaverton Hills Assisted Living Residence. He was 92.
He was born on July 24, 1916, in Pasadena, Calif., the son of William T. and Venice (Hess) Kahler. He grew up in California. In 1933, he entered the U.S. Navy and served in China and the Philippines before World War II.
He married Mary Crice on March 27, 1946, in Pearl Harbor. During World War II he served on submarines in the Pacific. He was commissioned during the war, with his submarine sinking 23 ships in the Pacific.
He retired in 1957 as a Commander in the Navy after serving on the Trigger and Skate submarines.
Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked in the aerospace industry and missile defense for six years in California. In 1972, he moved to Yamhill where he farmed, primarily walnuts and filberts.
In 2001 he moved to Eugene to be near his grandson, relocating to Beaverton in 2005.
He enjoyed firearms, shooting guns and rebuilding hot rod cars.
He is survived by his grandson Russell Hunt of Eugene, three additional grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2003.
