Businessman, Philanthropist. He is remembered as the founder of Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Born Robert Augustus Barnes, his father died when he was thirteen years old and he went to live with his uncle in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1830 he moved to St. Louis, Missouri and began working in the mercantile business. The following year he opened his own grocery and commission business and became very successful. In the 1840s he became president of the Bank of the State of Missouri for 26 years and held positions in other local companies, including the St. Louis Railroad Company. Upon his death at the age of 83, he left a portion of his wealth to build a hospital in his name to provide medical care for the sick and injured without distinction of creed, which first opened in December 1914. In 1996 it merged with Jewish Hospital and is known today as Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
