MARIA C.MATHENY, born Aug. 10, 1829, in Springfield, was married, June 12, 1849, to Stephen S. Whitehurst. They had seven children. [Note: birth and marriage years are different than in her obituary.]
Mrs. Maria C. Whitehurst died at 8 o'clock Friday morning at her home, 675 West Pugh street, from bronchial and heart trouble. She had been an invalid a number of years and for two months past her condition had been critical. She is survived by three daughters and one son, as follows: Misses Elizabeth and Susanne Whitehurst of Decatur, Mrs. George Helmle of Springfield and R.J. Whitehurst of Coatesville, Pa.
The funeral will be held some time Monday and the burial will take place in Oak Ridge cemetery in Springfield.
Mrs. Whitehurst was born July 23, 1830 in Springfield, and grew up in that city. Her maiden name was Maria Matheny, her family being among the most prominent in Springfield. She was married to Stephen Whitehurst in 1848 and seven children were born to them. Mr. Whitehurst died in Springfield in the year 1876. The family moved to Decatur in 1889 and Mrs. Whitehurst has since then lived here.
Mrs. Whitehurst joined the Methodist church at the age of 9 years and continued to hold her membership throughout her life. At her death, she was a member of the First Methodist church in this city. Hers was a most beautiful character. She was always interested in young people and everyone who knew her found her a friend.
