MRS. HELEN C. BLUE DIES AT INDEPENDENCE

Mrs. Helen Clampitt Blue, 97, oldest living resident of Independence, and the last to remember from personal observation the stirring events of the frontier town which later saw the establishment of Baylor University, died at her home on Wednesday at 4 p. m.

She was the widow of the late James H. Blue who was a native of Kentucky.

Mrs. Blue, mother of Mrs. B. F. Failey of Cameron, was born and reared in Washington County. She was a graduate of Baylor at Independence.

The high college hills still support the ruins of the old university. On the eastern edge of the town stood the men's dormitories and on the western edge almost a mile away were the girls dormitories. The Grecian columns still stand in the shadow of great live oaks. In between is the historic church were Mrs. Blue had worshiped for a life time.

Funeral services were held at the home on Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock with Rev. Cook of Brenham delivering the sermon. The body was buried in the old cemetery at Independence.

Surviving are six children: Frank Blue, Mrs. Mamie Rogers and Mrs. A. M. Williams of Independence, Mrs. C. W. Stiles of Brenham, Mrs. B. F. Bailey of Cameron and Mrs. Thad Wheeler of Harlingen.
