Mitch Mitchell
Birth: Jul. 9, 1947
Death: Nov. 12, 2008

Rock Musician. A drummer, he was a member of the short-lived but groundbreaking 1960s music group The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Born John Mitchell in Ealing, Middlesex, England, he played in the band The Blue Flames during his teenage years. In 1966, he joined Jimi Hendrix and Noel Redding to form The Jimi Hendrix Experience. His innovative drumming style along with Hendrix's legendary guitar playing and Redding's bass gave the trio a unique sound that can be heard in such songs as "Hey Joe" (1966), "The Wind Cries Mary" (1966) and "Purple Haze" (1966). Their albums include "Are You Experienced?" (1966), "Axis: Bold As Love" (1967) and "Electric Ladyland" (1968). A powerful performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 helped cement their place in music history. They disbanded in 1969. Mitchell continued to perform and record with various artists until his death from natural causes in Portland, Oregon. (bio by: C.S.)
