Stella was born in Nebraska, where her parents owned a 320-acre farm with huge orchards, including over 1000 apple trees. Her father ran into some legal difficulties and decided to sell the farm move to western Oklahoma, near the town of Harper, but well out in the country, where he bought a farm. Before Stella was 10, her young mother grew frustrated by life so far from "civilization," and her parents divorced. She and her sister were raised by her father.
On Christmas day in 1916, she married Harry Foster, who lived nearby. Harry and Stella had two children, Thelma and Kenny, before their marriage ended in divorce. She took a job as a retail saleslady, and later a hairdresser, to raise her children as a single mom.
In 1936 she married Paul Richardson and became the stepmother to his two children, Phyllis and John. Stella and Paul owned a small farm near Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Paul died in 1962. She lived on the farm until she passed away in 1978.
