The last words of Mr. Scherf, shortly before he died were, Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.

George Scherf was born near Baraboo, Wisconsin, July 18, 1857, and died at his home in the Fernwood district near Newberg, September 27, 1935, at the age of 78 years, 2 months & 9 days.

In May 1885, he was married to Minnie Schlung. The Lord blessed them with three children, irving, Alfred, and Elmer. After living together for 23 years, his wife died. Three years later, in 1911, he moved to Orgeon and bought land in the Fernwood district, which became his permanent home.

On February 12, 1920 he was married to Martha Schmidt of Iowa, who was a faithful companion to the end. Mr Scherf was confined to his bed for nearly ten months, during which time his dear wife did everything to make his last days pleasant.

In his childhood he visited the Sunday School and was confirmed in the catechism of the church. He joined the Methodist church at an early age, and was a true and faithful member and worker of the church all his life. He was an offical member for many years ans was always willing to assist in every good cause. We found him to be a peaceful, friendly brother in the church and neighborhood. He was esteemed highly by all who knew him. Of him we can truly say "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be the children of God."
