Professional Football Player. A cornerback, he is remembered for his eleven National Football League (NFL) seasons with the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. Born Robert DeLafayette Jeter, Jr., he was raised in Wierton, West Virginia, attended Dunbar High School and Wier High School, was a running back at the University of Iowa, and earned MVP honors in the 1959 Rose Bowl game against the Cal Golden Bears. Taken in the second round in the 1960 NFL draft, he spent two seasons with Vancouver of the Canadian Football League (CFL) before joining the Packers in 1962. Converted to defensive back by Coach Vince Lombardi, he was a key part of the formidable defense that helped the Packers win Super Bowls I and II. After making the Pro Bowl in 1967 and 1969, he finished his NFL career with the Bears, playing in the Windy City from 1971 thru 1973 and retiring with final totals of 26 interceptions and two TDs. After leaving the gridiron, he worked for the Chicago Park District, was named to the Packers' Hall of Fame in 1985, and lived out his days in Chicago; he died of a heart attack a week after prostate surgery.
