Louis "Dixie" Adelman

Carpet company owner, 90

Louis David "Dixie" Adelman, 90, of Montgomeryville, former owner of Adelman Carpets in Montgomeryville, died Tuesday of complications from Parkinson's disease at Grand View Hospital in West Rockhill Township.

With his wife, Mary Katherine Butz Adelman, he operated his carpet store from 1956-97. "His customers were his friends," said his son, Roger. "He loved to interact with people."

"Everyone called him Dixie," said his son, who did not know how his father acquired his nickname while growing up in South Philadelphia.

Mr. Adelman dropped out of high school and sold The Inquirer on city street corners. "My father was educated by reading the newspapers," his son said.

In the 1930s he traveled to Norristown, in the country, to recover from illness - and stayed. He eventually became manager of the Little Ritz, a nightclub in Center Square.

In 1935, he married a local girl. The daughter of German Protestants and the son of Russian Jews "made a great team," their son said. "They were inseparable." The couple lived in Norristown until moving to Montgomeryville in 1962. Mrs. Adelman died in 1995.

A devoted Phillies fan, Mr. Adelman attended games every Sunday and in his 80s went to spring training. "He ran around getting autographs," his son said. "He had a wonderful time."

In addition to his son, he is survived by daughter Jean A. Fried.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Boyd-Horrox Funeral Home, 200 W. Germantown Pike, East Norriton. Friends may call at noon. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery , Norristown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson's Action Network, Suite 500, 300 N. Lee St., Alexandria, Va. 22314.
