President of the Maldives. He served as the nation's first president from 1968 to 1978, following independence from Great Britain. He is credited with modernizing the nation's commercial fishing and telecommunications industry, introducing tourism, developing a free market economy based on foreign trade, and the creation of a world class international airport. Prior to serving as president, he served as prime minister from 1957 to 1968 under British colonial rule. He resigned from the presidency after ten years in office, amid allegations of political corruption and mishandling of public funds. Following his resignation, he moved to the island nation of Singapore, where he remained until his death.
