Services for Murry "Neil" Macaulay of McMinnville will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors. The Rev. Harold Otterlei will officiate. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Visitation will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the chapel of Macy & Son.

Mr. Macaulay died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at Hillside Retirement Community. He was 87.

He was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Bellingham, Wash., the son of Murry Donald and Nellie Pearl (McLeod) Macaulay. After six years in Deming, Wash., the family moved to Forks, Wash. on the Olympic Peninsula.

After graduating from Quillayute Union High School in Forks, he attended Washington State University, graduating with a degree in hotel administration in 1943. Upon completion of four years in the U.S. Army ROTC and four months at Officer Candidate School in Georgia, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant.

He joined the 4th Infantry Division in England in April, 1944, and participated in the Normandy Landing. While with the 4th Division, he was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters, E.T.O. Ribbon with five Campaign Clusters and a Bronze Arrowhead. After being wounded three times, he left the 4th Division in April, 1945, and was discharged in January, 1946.

Mr. Macaulay married Margaret D. Hopkins in Monroe, Wash., on August 22, 1948. He resided in Everett and Seattle, Wash. for seven years, working at Armour Meat Packers for five years. He was in charge of the Alaska business before being promoted to a higher position.

In 1955, the couple moved to McMinnville where he owned and operated a motel for eight years. After selling the motel, Mr. Macaulay worked briefly in real estate before starting work with the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs in Portland. He became manager of the Beaverton office for the Veterans' Department, retiring in 1984 after serving 16 years with the department.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge #1283, Chamber of Commerce, 4th Infantry Division, Washington State University Alumni, Michelbook Country Club, Disabled Army Veterans, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and volunteered for Red Cross.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Thomas Macaulay of Tualatin and Mark Macaulay of Scappoose; a daughter, Leslie A. Macaulay of Tigard; a brother, Hugh Macaulay of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; a sister, Jean Hart Duling of Seattle; and three grandchildren.
