Grandson of John B. McFarlan, founder of the McFarlan Carriage Company. Harry is credited with the idea to develop the McFarlan Motor Car Company which produced the McFarlan automobile, sometimes known as the "American Rolls-Royce" which operated from 1909 to 1928.
He was a 1902 graduate of DePauw University where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He was later a DePauw trustee.
McFarlan moved to Arizona in the mid-1920s due to ill health and never returned to Connersville.
