Oceanographer, Film Producer. He is best remembered as a documentary film maker specializing in environmental issues, with a background in oceanography. The 2nd son of famed ocean explorer and marine conservation pioneer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, he first dived with an aqua-lung, co-developed by his father, in 1945. By the age of 7 he has become a professional diver. He grew up travelling the world with his father, learning about different cultures and mastered several languages. In February 1967 he accompanied his father on the RV "Calypso," a former British Royal Navy minesweeper that was converted into a research vessel, on an expedition to film the sharks of the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. As well as being the lead photographer for the expedition, he also wrote about his experiences in the 1970 publication "Shark: Splendid Savage of the Sea." From 1965 to 1975, he co-produced, directed, and filmed more than twenty-six episodes of the ABC-TV series "The Undersea World Of Jacques Cousteau," which was nominated for a 1971 Emmy and two 1972 Emmys for Cinematography For News. He co-produced numerous documentaries with his father, including "Voyage to the Edge of the World" (1976, for the cinema theatres), his own PBS television series, Cousteau: "Oasis in Space", and PBS television's "Calypso's Search For Atlantis: Cousteau Journey," the latter two being nominated in 1978 for Outstanding Informational Series and Outstanding Informational Special respectively. A second PBS television special, "The Nile: The Cousteau Odyssey," was nominated for a 1980 Emmy for Outstanding Informational Special. He was considered the heir apparent to continue his father's work when he was killed in a Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boat crash in the Tagus River near Lisbon, Portugal at the age of 38. His children, Alexandra Cousteau and Philippe Cousteau, Jr. continue the family work in oceanography as the Co-Founders of EarthEcho International.
