The surname was spelled Kolzer, with an umlaut over the o, but anglicized to this spelling that is used today in America.

He was the son of Johann Peter Kolzer and Sybilla Theis. His exact birthdate was not found due to a loss of some sort in the original church records.

Andreas emigrated with his remaining children in 1853, after his oldest son John Peter Koelzer emigrated in 1851, and then encouraged the rest of the family to follow him.

Andreas' wife Magdalena Peiffer died March 2, 1852, in Mittelstrimmig, before the family left Germany.

The Koelzers were from the village of Mittelstrimmig, in Rheinland province, not far from Koblenz, Germany.

Most of Andreas' children eventually left Wisconsin for Nemaha County, Kansas in the late 1850s, and then later some of their own children left Kansas for Texas.

Andreas remained in Wisconsin with his daughter Susanna who had married Peter Reif, who founded Reifs Mills.

Andreas probably died there at his daughter's house.

Another of his children was Maria Magdalena Koelzer Rettele, buried at Seneca, Kansas, id# 35396218.

From Wikipedia re: Mittelstrimmig, Germany, where the Koelzer family was from:
"Mittelstrimmig lies together with the neighbouring municipality of Altstrimmig on a high ridge in the northern Hunsrück roughly 30 km from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport.

"Mittelstrimmig is the biggest village in the so-called Strimmiger Berg and, thanks to a great deal of woodlands, is among the Hunsrück’s wealthiest municipalities."

Also from Wikipedia re: Andreas's emigration with his family -- they were in the second wave of 39 emigrants in 1853: "On 26 May 1852, 151 persons (56 of whom were 14 or younger, the rest of whom were over 14) left Mittelstrimmig for New York, landing there on 13 June of the same year. They made their new homes in Wisconsin in, among other places, Green Bay, Washington County, Sheboygan, Milwaukee, Germantown, Farmington, Cedarburg and Appleton. Another wave of emigration followed in July of the very next year. This saw 39 persons leave, also bound for New York, with their route going by way of Cologne, Antwerp, Liverpool or Hamburg and Bremen. " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelstrimmig
