Death Takes Brooks Rogers
Funeral Today For Pioneer Resident
James Brooks Rogers, Sr., 84 years old, a native East Texan and a resident of Harrison county 60 years, died at the family residence, 411 East Merritt St., at 7:15 p. m. yesterday after a lingering illness.
Mr. Rogers had been a resident of Marshall since February, 1911.
The funeral services will be at the residence at 4 p. m. today, conducted by the Rev. Harlan J. Matthews, pastor of the First Baptist church of which he was a member, with burial in Algoma cemetery.
Mr. Rogers was widely known in Marshall and served as night-watchman for the city for 20 years before retiring several years ago.
He was the son of William J. Rogers and Sarah Davis Rogers, a pioneer East Texas family and was born in Panola county June 22, 1858. He moved to Harrison county in his youth.
He and Miss Hattie Ella Hightower were married on Nov. 13, 1879.
Survivors are his wife and the following children: Mrs. Sam Bratton, wife of Federal Judge Sam Bratton of Albuquerque, N. M., James B. Rogers, Jr., assistant postmaster, Mrs. Minnie Cadenhead, of Marshall; T. Guy Rogers and Mrs. Maude Kirk of San Antonio; Mrs. Berry Orr of Hereford and Mrs. Anna V. Bassow of Stephenville, O.; one sister, Mrs. E. E. Cheny of Kerens and one brother, John Rogers of Oklahoma.
Active pallbearers will be Lee Hawley, Robert Hightower, Marion Hightower, R. S. Matthews, L. F. Green and Frank M. Scroggins.
