Thelma Dean Gray, 88, died Monday, October 28, 2002 at her residence. Mrs. Gray was born November 11, 1913 in Charleston, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the Columbus Evert Dean and Stella Blanche Cavender Dean. She was a graduate of Charleston High School in Charleston, W. Virginia. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Col. Russell Earl Gray, USAF Ret. Married to an Air Force Officer she never consented to fly to any destination. Even though she and the family lived in the Phillipines and Hawaii, travel by ocean-liner was her means of transportation. She and her husband retired in the Washington, D.C. area and later moved to Melbourne, FL. Six years ago they relocated to Charleston, SC. Mrs. Gray is survived by one brother, Kermit Dean, of Los Angeles, CA; one sister Betty Laparl, of Ohio; one son Russell Earl Gray, Jr. and wife Patricia, of Atlanta, GA.; one daughter, Penelope(Penny) Todd and husband Larry, of Charleston, SC.; 4 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to attend a family visitation at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, 150 Wntworth Street, on Thursday, October 31, 2002 from 4:00-6:00 PM. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, November 1, 2002 at 10:00 AM in the funeral home chapel. Private interment services will follow in the Beaufort National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Charleston, 3896 Leeds Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405, or to the Coastal Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer Association, PO Box 80459, Charleston, SC 29416
