Dr. Richard R. Powell, 90, of Marianna passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2008 in Marianna.

Dr. Powell was born December 18, 1918, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of the late Richard Nathan and Helen Ripple Powell. He moved at a young age with his family to Tampa, Florida and lived most of his life there until moving to Marianna in 1988.

Dr. Powell graduated from H.B. Plant High School in Tampa and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tampa in 1939. After five years of active military duty in the Navy, he went back to school to earn a D.D.S. degree from Loyola University Dental School in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1955. Dr. Powell was a retired Captain in the United States Navy and often spoke with fond memories of his life in the military. He was also in love with his profession as a dentist having practiced privately for 33 years. After moving to Marianna in 1988, he was proud to be the resident dentist at Dozier School until health issues required him to retire in 2000 at the age of 82.

To those who knew him, Dr. Powell was a happy and energetic man who loved life, his family, and friends. He will be remembered for his wisdom, his jovial personality, and his knack to always tell a good joke.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Maureen Powell Hattaway.

Dr. Powell is survived by his wife, Jane Oliver Powell of Marianna; their two daughters, Olivia Rae Powell and Rachel Leigh Powell, both of Tallahassee, FL; three sons, Winston Klintworth Powell and wife Diana, of Lake Panasoffkee, FL, Bruce Allen Powell and wife Faith, of Marietta, GA, and William Richard Powell of Oklahoma City, OK. He is also survived by his sister, Martha Powell Brincklow of Dunedin, FL; five grandchildren, Davis Powell, Jonathan Powell, Rebecca Powell, Rachel Powell, and Cyrus Selman, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 P.M. Saturday, December 27 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church of Marianna with Dr. Huw Christopher officiating. Burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Friday, December 26, 2008 at James and Sikes Maddox Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Marianna.
