Professional Football Player. After his sophomore year at Duke, he joined the Navy and played service football with the Fort Pierce Naval Amphibious Training Base Commandos in 1944. After the war he returned to Duke. After graduating he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Washington Redskins in 1948. After his rookie season, the Redskins traded him to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He started in the defensive backfield for the Steelers from 1949 to 1952. He led the Steelers in interceptions three of his four seasons, including a then NFL record of ten interceptions in a twelve game schedule. In his five National Football League seasons he made 28 interceptions. He died of cancer.
