William Coulter Cothran graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1893. He was admitted to the bar in 1897, and practiced law in Greenville, SC, where he was President of the Greenville Bar Association and Judge of the Circuit and State Supreme Court. For many years he shared a house with his brother, Thomas P. Cothran, and later they lived at the Pointsett Hotel in Greenville, SC. He had a great interest in golf and took a keen pleasure in bird watching.
