Roman Catholic Cardinal. Pontremoli born Carlo Chiarlo entered seminary in Lucca, later pursuing his studies at the Pontifical Angelicum Athenaeum in Rome. Ordained priest in May 1904, he was appointed to the teaching staff of the named seminary of Lucca, in which diocese he rendered pastoral ministry until 1917, when he was named secretary and later, chargé d'affaires of the apostolic nunciature in Perú. Auditor of the apostolic nunciature in Poland between 1922 and 1928, he was named privy chamberlain of His Holiness on May 26, 1918, being later reappointed on July 21, 1922 by Pope Pius XI. Elected archbishop of the titular see of Amida, he received his episcopal consecration on November 11, 1928, at the chapel of the Collegio Pio-Latinoamericano of Rome from Cardinal Pietro Gasparri, Secretary of State. Named apostolic nuncio in Bolivia on the following day, he was appointed nuncio in Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Panamá on January 7, 1932. Transferred to the newly established nunciature in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panamá on December 19, 1933, he was recalled to Rome in 1941, and charged with the special mission of assisting prisoners of the Second World War. Assigned as head of the pontifical mission to Germany in 1945 and as apostolic nuncio in Brazil on March 19, 1946, he served as nuncio at disposition of the Secretariat of State from September 1954 until 1958, when at seventy seven years of age, he was elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals by Pope John XXIII in the consistory of December 15 with Chiarlo receiving the title of Santa Maria in Portico, deaconry elevated pro illa vice to title. Decorated as knight grand cross of the Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana on December 17, 1953, the Cardinal died of an intestinal tumour, from which he suffered for more than seven months at his family home in Lucca during the night of January 21, 1964 and lies interred inside the Urban Cemetery of the named city.
