Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Montedoro, Giuseppe Guarino was baptized by his uncle Father Pietro Guarino, who happened to be the local parish priest. Entering seminary in Agrigento, he was ordained priest in September 1849 with a special dispensation having not yet reached the canonical age. Secretary of the Tribunale di Monarchia e Apostolica Legazia of Palermo, between 1861 and 1871 he served as dean of the faculty of canon law at the University of Palermo. Elected Archbishop of Syracuse, Guarino received his episcopal consecration in Palermo on March 17, 1872. Arriving in Syracuse by train on April 1, Guarino was transferred to the metropolitan see of Messina on July 5, 1875 as its 104th Archbishop, making his ingression on August 3. Named administrator 'ad nutum Apostolicae Sedis' of the prelature of Santa Lucia del Mela and archimandrite of the SS. Salvatore by Pope Leo XIII, the latter elevated him to the Sacred College of Cardinals as cardinal priest with the title of San Tommaso in Parione in the consistory of January 16, 1893. Founding of the religious congregation of the Apostole della Sacra Famiglia in 1889, the Cardinal suffered a stroke on February 1, 1895, which left him semi paralyzed and unable to speak. Aided by his vicar general, Msgr. Giuseppe Basile, he remained in office, passing peacefully away after praying the Divine Office due to complications from pneumonia, having received extreme unction. Clad in sacred vestments, his body was laid out in state at the metropolitan cathedral of Messina, where a solemn funeral mass was celebrated by the auxiliary bishop, Msgr. di Alcontres with future saint, Annibale Maria di Francia delivering the homily. Originally buried at the Monumental Cemetery of Messina, in 1907, his body was exhumed and found incorrupt. Transferred to the cathedral of Messina, where a splendid monument was erected in his memory, in 1983 it was moved to the General House of the Apostole della Sacra Famiglia which he founded. The cause for his canonization was opened in 1985.
