Author, Playwright, Screenwriter. He is perhaps best known for the "Rumpole" novel series, which became a popular British television show starring Leo McKern. Born John Clifford Mortimer in Hampstead, London, England, he attended Harrow School and studied law at Brasenose College, Oxford becoming a practicing barrister. During World War II, he worked at the Crown Film Unit and wrote his first novel "Charade" in 1947. Beginning in the 1950s, he wrote for such British television programs as "The Wednesday Play" and "Armchair Theatre". His motion picture contributions include "Lunch Hour" (1961), "The Innocents" (1961), "Guns of Darkness" (1962), "Bunny Lake is Missing" (1965), "John and Mary" (1969) and "Tea with Mussolini" (1999). He was formerly married to novelist Penelope (Fletcher) Mortimer (1918-1999) who is best known for "The Pumpkin Eater". He was the father of actress Emily Mortimer. He was knighted in 1998.
