He was married to Hettie (Brumley) Short in 1846 in Arkansas City, Ark.

They lived in Montague, Grayson and Tom Green where they lived in Ben Ficklin working cattle. they were the parents of Luke Short, the Gambler, gunfighter and friend of Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson.

Josiah had been a post Master in Arkansas then farmer and rancher in Texas and was even attacked by Indians and lived.

The family had ten children and were upstanding members of Tom Green County. Josiah died of old age and was buried in the Ben Ficklin Cemetery.
