Mable I. Smith, 84, died on Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at Northwest Medical Center, CNC Unit, Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 28, at the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Phil Schmidt officiating. Casket bearers included Earl Gibson, Lowell Naeseth, David Jelle, Rita Jelle, Dwight Jelle, and K. Hamilton. Honorary casket bearers included Darrell Jelle, Diane Jelle, Allison Nowaki, Linda Strain, Ursala Dahl and Stewart Dahl. Interment was held at St. Olaf Cemetery in Grygla.
Mable Irene Smith was born on February 15, 1921 in Red Lake, the daughter of Curtis A. and Esther (Dolson) Smith. She was baptized in rural Grygla, and attended Country School, graduating from Red Lake High School in Red Lake in 1940.
After having to leave her much loved farm near Grygla, Mable moved to Thief River Falls, where she made her home the rest of her life.
She was employed at Woolworth's for 13 years and in the Laundry Department at Northwestern Hospital in Thief River Falls for 20 years.
Mable was an avid reader and was well versed on most any subject. She enjoyed gardening, cross stitching, traveling and working crossword puzzles. She taught Sunday school and was a member of United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women's Group.
Mable is survived by one sister, Myrtle Jelle of Bloomington; sister-in-law, Christine Smith of Bensen, Ariz.; nieces and nephews; and her extended family, Ursula Dahl, Linda Strain, Alison (John) Nowacki, Stuart (Martha) Dahl, Gloria (Marty) Reierson and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Harold Smith and Chester Smith; and many aunts and uncles.
