William Caven was born about seven miles from Gettysburgh and went to McKeesport about 1806. He a major in the War of 1812, served as Sheriff of Allegheny County 1828-1830. He was one of the managers of the Pittsburg & Greenburg Turnpike Co.

William Caven was a merchant and operated the salt works on the Youghiogheny River near the mouth of Long Run.

He was the father of John Caven, mayor of Indianapolis.
