Widow Of Inventer Of Coca Cola and Prominent Columbus Druggist
The remains of Mrs. J. S. Pemberton, aged 73? years, whose death occurred at the home of her sister, ?. S. Newman at Walhalla, S.C. on Tuesday night at 10 o'clock, arrived in the city yesterday morning. They were immediately taken to the house of Mr. John P. Turner on Rose Hill, from which the funeral occurred yesterday afternoon at four o'clock.
The services were conducted by the Rev. D. W. McGregor, and the interment was in Linwood cemetery, in the family lot, beside the grave of her husband , the late Dr. J. S. Pemberton and his son.
The deceased was a former resident of Columbus, and the family was among the oldest settlers here. They moved here several years after the civil war, the late Dr. Pemberton at the time being one of the most prominent druggist in this section.
Dr. Pemberton was the inventor of the Coca Cola formula, afterwards selling it to parties who disposed of it to the C----iers of Atlanta, who have made a fortune in the manufacture of the beverage.
Mrs Pemberton was a devoted member of the St. Luke Methodist church here, and the oldest residents of Columbus will remember her very pleasantly. The news of her death will cast sorrow over many houses in this section, where she was known and loved so well by those who knew her. by her kind and
gentle disposition she won scores of friends wherever she went and among all classes.
