US Congressman. He moved to Dixmont, Maine (then part of Massachusetts) in 1804 and became a prominent farmer, merchant and businessman, with interests including a flour mill. During the War of 1812 he raised a company which he commanded with the rank of Captain, and he maintained his militia membership, later attaining the rank of Colonel. In 1819 and 1820 he was a Delegate to the constitutional convention that created the state of Maine. Butman served in the Maine House of Representatives in 1822 and in the Maine Senate from 1826 to 1827. He was then elected first as a Adams Candidate, then as an Anti-Jacksonian to represent Maine's 7th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1827 to 1831. In 1846 he was elected to the Penobscot County Commission. He returned to the Maine Senate in 1853 and was Senate President. He served throughout his life in local offices including Justice of the Peace, and also served as President of both the Penobscot County Agricultural Society and the Maine Board of Agriculture.
