US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US House of Representatives for a total of eight terms, from the Illinois 10th congressional district (1877 until 1883), the Illinois 11th congressional district (1893 until 1895), the Illinois 15th congressional district (1895 until 1901), and the Illinois 14th congressional district (1903 until his death). He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1860. After the American Civil War broke out in April 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army as a private and later received a colonel's commission. During the war, he saw combat action at the Battle of Shiloh (April 1862) and the Battle of Antietam (September 1862). Following the war, he returned to Warsaw, Illinois and practiced law until he was first elected to the US House of Representatives. He died around the age of 66.
