A 1950 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY, his 25-year military career followed those of his grandfather, father, and brother. he served in Vietnam where he commanded the 6th Battalion of the 56th Artillery Brigade. Several assignments later, he was twice awarded the Legion of Merit, and a number of other citations for his excellent service. He earned two Masters Degree in Education, and attended the Army War College. After retirement from his military career he served as Director of the Federal Officers' Assn. in Washington, D.C.; attended George Mason University Law School in Virginia and received a Juris Doctorate degree in 1985; passing the Virginia Bar exam the same year.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Joan L. Farrell of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Farrell Watson & Robert C. Watson, Jr.; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas F. Farrell II & Anne Garland T. Farrell, all of Virginia, and Timothy F. Farrell & Kathy R. Farrell, both of Colorado; sister, Barbara F. Vucanovich, and brother, Tephen, both of Nevada.

Interment with his parents, grandparents, and sister followed funeral services conducted at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel, Arlington, VA, Thursday, January 31, 2008.

Legion of Merit Citation:

Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Major (Field Artillery) Peter B. Farrell, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from July 1961 to July 1964.
