This Contee family was of French Huguenot descent coming from England directly to Maryland, settling on the Eastern Shore. The English Huguenot fled to Germany due to religious wars in France. In the 17th and 18th Centuries, Germany was probably the period of greatest unrest in Europe since the decline of the Holy Roman Empire. Germany was a battlefield; the Palatinate had been subject to invasion and destruction for half a century. The winter of 1708-09 added a long severe cold which brought untold suffering.
The Huguenots of the Eastern Shore of MD settlement were thoroughly Anglicized; they came with the English and helped to develop the plantation culture of early MD. They were English in language, religious affiliation and culture from their life in England following the flight from France.
