Traditionally, one of the members of Robin Hood's legendary band of Merry Men, Scarlet originally appeared in one of the oldest surviving of the Robin Hood legends, ‘A Gest of Robyn Hode,' which appeared in print between 1490 and 1530. The figure of Scarlet has also been associated with other aliases throughout the history of the legend; including Scarlett, Scadlock, Scarlock, Scatheloke, Scarlok, Scalok, Scarelock, Scarllett, Scadlocke, Scardelocke, Shirlock, and Skirlock. He is most often described as either a cousin or nephew of Robin Hood, and in later versions of the tales, takes the role of the dandy. Although a study of 14th century parish records returned a family called Schacklock, there has never been any conclusive evidence for the historical Scarlet. Traditionally, Scarlet was said to have been killed in a battle with the sheriff's men and his grave is said to be located in at the Church of St. Mary in Blidworth, Nottinghamshire, in the former Sherwood Forest. Scarlet's alleged grave is marked by the apex stone from the old church tower.
