2nd born of Lewis and Mary Nichols. By 1860, he and his parents and siblings were in McHenry Co., IL. He first married to Clara Hart, with whom he had 7 children. After she died unexpectedly in 1900, he remarried to Anna Monuskey. With Anna he had another 9 children, 8 of whom lived to adulthood. They adopted out at least 2 of their children as infants, possibly more.

Charles worked many odd jobs, including gardening and a dairy teamster. At the time of his death at age 73, his youngest child was 5 years old. He died from tuberculosis, his young wife dying two years later, leaving 5 minor children (the 6th was adopted out as an infant).
